In 1861 the Confederate Congress authorized the recruitment of 400,000 men however in the begining of 1862 the draft of all white males between the ages of 18 and 35 began. At the start of the war 313 officers left the US army and joined the Confederate Army to protect their homes and families.
In the end a total of 1,406,180 men joined or were drafted into the CS army.
